About MiCT:
Media in Cooperation and Transition (MiCT) gGmbH is a German media development organisation that implements projects in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. MiCT’s activities focus on the interplay between conflict, media coverage and reconciliation in crisis regions. The organisation was established in 2004 with a head office based in Berlin.
MiCT’s services include the training of journalists and media producers, programme and content development, production of radio programmes, films and books, as well as media research and monitoring in conflict zones. An international team of 10 full-time staff members work at MiCT’s headquarters in Berlin. Through its projects, MiCT aims at fostering the transformation from conflict towards reconciliation and to encourage dialogue among conflicting factions within society. Our focal point is the interaction and interdependence of media and conflict. Supporting media cooperation, media networking and media development, as well as capacity building in the field of journalism, is presumed to be a key factor in conflict transition.
For the past 12 years MiCT has been conducting investigative reporting training and has produced investigative reports in cooperation with local journalists in Iraq, Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Sudan & South Sudan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Maldives, as well as several countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Both correspondents.org and niqash.org are established platforms for investigative journalism.
Background:
Under the umbrella of the Interreligious Platform for Dialogue and Cooperation in the Arab world, the Programme aims at developing strategies and tools for promoting the core values of journalism in reporting religions and conflicts in the Arab region. The Programme is a pilot programme for a dialogue journalism fellowship in support of journalism and media in the Arab region that aspire to promote journalism ethical standards with regard to reporting on religious and ethnic groups, as a mean to foster new inter- community dialogue, and promote peace and sustainable development.
The Programme pursues the following objectives:
· Boosting the role of journalists in policy advocacy and awareness raising against hate speech resulting from conflicts and the misuse of religion in the Arab region.
· Linking journalists from different faith backgrounds with religious leaders and policy makers across the region, as well as and with other regional and international actors to strengthen their contribution to the peace reporting at the local and national levels.
· Increasing commitment and capacities of journalists from Arab countries to promote pluralism, diversity, peaceful coexistence, ethical standards of journalism and counter hate speech.
· Enhancing the engagement of trained journalists in conducting joint projects between media outlets and Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs) to break stereotyping, with a specific focus on countering the misuse of media for spreading hatred.
Scope of work & Deliverables:
• Lead the online training through the delivery of lectures and webinars
• Lead 3 trainings, 4 days each (Core trainer 15 days, 9 days specialist trainers x2)
• Support and develop with researcher at MiCT the curriculum for training
• Implement the curriculum focused on dialogue concepts and values, core ethics of journalism in conflict and religion sensitive environments
• Deliver three on-site workshops (COVID permitting) including interreligious and intercultural dialogue methods to journalism capacities
• Support mentorship program designed for participants to deliver grant funded projects
• Engage with participants and ensure interaction and support their development
Required
• At least two years of relevant work experience in media, interfaith dialogue workshops or demonstrated relevant experience
• Proven training and facilitation skills
• University degree in journalism, peace and conflict studies, divinity or related field
• General understanding of topics including hate speech, media ethics, and interreligious dialogue
• Fluency in Arabic and English, both written and spoken
• Experience in media within international non-governmental organizations
• Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to cultural differences and gender issues, as well as the commitment to equal opportunities
Additional qualifications
- Working in the field of interfaith and intercultural dialogue
- Experience in journalistic mentorship, training and grant management is an asset
- Online training experience via Zoom or other similar online platforms
- Understanding of religious approaches to peace building and additional training experience is a plus
