Position Title: CHW (Community Health Worker).

Field Site: Brega.

Date Needed: 11-April-2021

Position Reports to: Medical Doctor.

Job Summary:
Community Health Worker will work on promoting healthy life style, healthy behaviors and healthy practices in the targeted community and will advise against unhealthy behaviors through working directly with IMC and MOH team at targeted PHC facility and its catchment population , CHW will also act as a link between the health facility and community , informing the community members about available health services and how to reach them, CHW will participate also in any awareness and health promotion campaigns or health outreach activities lunched by local health authorities.

Main tasks:

Tasks include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Providing health awareness and patient education on the most relevant health topics, related to the most prevailing morbidities and health problems in the targeted population, with a focus on Chronic Non Communicable Diseases (CNCD), Health promotion, life style modifications and risk mitigation in relation to CNCD, and advocacy for adoption of behavioral changes that can improve health situation of the community.

2. Identification of risk factors that can affect the status of public health in the targeted catchment population, and use of health promotion to improve the public health status, by promoting healthy conditions and behaviors and deterring against risky health behaviors.

3. CHW should act as a communication link between the available health services and resources and the catchment population, CHW will guide and refer the population towards the most relevant health services they require.

4. CHWs should inform the health care providers and health authorities about any specific health needs in the community.

5. CHWs need to report about suspected health hazards and possible outbreaks.

6. CHWs should be aware of the EWARN diseases and should report them to health care officials responsible for reporting at the PHCC or PHCU serving the specific population of concern.

7. CHWs should be able to participate in any health campaigns including vaccination campaigns and health outreach activities to remote communities among the catchment areas assigned to him/ her.

8. She/he will work closely with other medical team members and the supervising medical coordinator.

9. successfully develop and implement health sensitization activities in catchment area of the PHCC targeted.

10. The CHW must be willing to carryout regular (up to daily) visits of targeted communities.

11. CHW will collaborate with M&E team to ensure capturing of activities in line with donor and internal requirements.

12. The CHW will assist staff with other activities and support as necessary.

13. CHW need to work according to existing protocols and plans of MOH prepared for CHW and community outreach programs.

14. CHW may need to communicate with and report activities to the MOH focal point of CHW activities.

Qualifications and responsibilities:

  • Good general health knowledge especially in relation to common health problem like common non communicable
    diseases.
  •  Experience and previous participation in health promotion and health education campaigns is desirable.
  • Good Knowledge of local health system especially primary health care sector at targeted municipality.
  •  Experience in MOH and NCDC health promotion programs is desirable.
  • Ability to maintain effective relationship with the community and municipal representatives.
  •  Demonstrates a high degree of self-motivation Has a good established network in targeted the community.
  •  Has good communication skills and the capacity to facilitate presentations, meetings, and discussions concerning health and social issues.
  • Able to provide assistance to all individuals and nationalities.
  •  Able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Able to provide feedback/reports regarding work-related activities
  •  Capacity to work as member of a team.
  •  Partnering and engaging with community stakeholders.
  •  Community Facilitation skills.

Other Comments:

Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse
Actively promote PSEA (Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse) standards within International Medical Corps and amongst beneficiaries served by International Medical Corps.
Any other duties that may be assigned from time by supervisors.

As applicable to the position, maintains a clear understanding of International Medical Corps’ and donor compliance and ethics standards and adheres to those standards. Conducts work with the highest level of integrity.
