Position Title: MHPSS Counselor.

Position Reports to: MHPSS Specialist.

Field Site: Sabha.

Job Summary:
Mental health and psychosocial support counselors offer guidance to individuals, couples, families and groups who are dealing with issues that affect their mental health and well-being. Many counselors approach their work holistically, using a “wellness” model (as opposed to an “illness” one) which highlights and encourages client’s strengths.

Main Tasks:
Tasks include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide specialized psychosocial support and assistance to clients and their families with mental
    health and psychosocial issues.
  • Coordinate the provision of case management and psychosocial services to clients and families
    to enable these parties to deal with the impact of illness and stress on individual family
    functioning and to achieve maximum benefits from healthcare services.
  • Develop care plans that are individualized and mutually developed with the client, with focus on
    any immediate safety concerns.
  • Conduct risk assessments and advise staff on carrying out risk assessments and the
    development of safety plans.
  • Complete all documentation requirements in a timely and comprehensive manner.
  • Participate actively in supervision and training sessions provided by MHPSS Specialist.
  • Provide awareness sessions alongside autonomously or in collaboration with multidisciplinary
    team staff on topics related to mental health and psychosocial functioning.
  • Develop and deliver trainings for medical teams on topics relevant to psychological practice and
    case management.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Respect and prioritize client confidentiality, boundaries, and any conflicts of interest to ensure
    protection of all clients and their families.
  • Perform other job-related duties as requested by MHPSS Specialist.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Experience in provision of mental health or psychosocial support through school, work, or volunteer experience (1+ year preferred).
  • Previous experience working in an NGO (preferred).
  • Commitment to humanitarian principles (required).
  • Fluent Arabic and highly proficient written and spoken English (required).

Other Comments:

  • Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse.
  • Actively promote PSEA (Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse) standards within International Medical Corps and amongst beneficiaries served by International Medical Corps.
  • Any other duties that may be assigned from time by supervisors.
